We've just had an emergency alert on my cellphone - the mayor has declared a state of emergency for the town. My garage is flooded - it's lower than the house- and the water is up to the bottom of the back door step. I'm just going to hang tight and keep an eye on the water, and I may make myself a cup of coffee. Good luck John.

Thank you. The coffee is brewing, and I've decided not to go back to bed. It's 2am here.

A view out my back door. You can see water around the flange of the drain - this is what I'm watching. So far, it hasn't risen for an hour or so. The water has to reach the top of the step you can see, to get into the house.

Thank you both. That was an enjoyable cup of coffee. So far, it looks like the water level is stable. Yesterday, thankfully, I shifted everything vulnerable off the garage floor.

Bright and shiny here so far. Despite (or possibly because of) all the rain, half-plot 1 on the allotments is digging almost perfectly, so I'm going to try to get it finished for winter in the next 10 days or so. Half-plot 2 is a bit more awkward. There's already standing water in the bottom of the edges, although I intend to give half of it up in spring once I've got my brassicas off it, this still means the rest may be too sodden to dig already. That's what happened last year - it then went from sodden to concrete far too fast for me to get it dug. We shall see! What you do in your own time... Just for you, big boy, just for you. It's that big hairie Willie that does it! Another couple of hours digging - it's drier just 24 hours later, and is digging incredibly. Another 2-3 hours should see this plot sorted for the winter. I'm hoping I can get onto the other plot then - it's actually not too bad at the mo. The job that worries me is moving the buckshee asparagus from the part I intend to give up. You are not supposed to be able to transplant the stuff easily, but I'm a stubborn bugger and I'm damned if I am leaving my best asparagus plant for someone else. Especially as the blow-in has done far better than the crowns I bought!

The rain has eased, temporarily. More is predicted for later today, though.

Now that daylight is here I won't have to furtle round with a torch to watch the water. It's still raining, and the water is rising again. It is supposed to go on like this until around 9pm today.

Thank you. There are others in a worse state here - 100 people have had to go to evacuation centres, and the Otago Peninsula is cut off, with slips blocking both access roads. To make matters worse for them, another slip has taken out their water main from the city.

A grey morning, this morning, with light drizzle - although this afternoon should be fine. All the surface water is gone.
