My flat is one of the oldest buildings in Helensburgh. Don't get too excited, the town as it stands today is largely Victorian and the date on our deeds for this property is '1863 or thereabouts'. I've been searching, in a very idle manner, for the oldest photograph or painting of it that I can find. So far, the earliest I've found is actually held in the National Gallery of Scotland, here: www.nationalgalleries.org/art-and-artists/116720/clyde-street-helensburghShot by James Valentine who died in 1879.

He did it when it was almost new then I've now established that the monument in front of us was erected in 1872 so that narrows things down a bit as to when the photograph was made - some time between 1872 and 1879.
