What is rarely discussed is why the UK appears so much more attractive than other countries. Clearly the mismanaged economy (compared to other western countries in western Europe) is not a sufficient deterrent.
Yes, one can only presume that the people smugglers 'sell' the idea of a land of milk and honey, in order to perpetuate their disgusting trade. It's a pity that the poor people fleeing persecution and war don't get to ask someone who actually lives here, and who knows the reality of the desolate place it has become, during the past few years of Tory abuse of our economy and society.
It saddens me to say this, but if I were a few decades younger, I would be on a boat going in the opposite direction.

Some time ago, I read that one reason migrants favour the UK is that for many, English is their second language. I once had a fascinating conversation with a man who ran an Indian (well, really Bangladeshi) restaurant in a town in Tuscany. He had been there over twenty years, and having mastered Italian, had been careful to keep his English in regular use by talking to visitors like my wife and I. However, I once witnessed him pretending not to understand English when the restaurant was busy and a large family of US citizens with teenage children were being very annoying ('Why don't you serve Coke? Call this a restaurant?'). He later admitted to being a Basil Fawlty fan.

Tuscany is the home of Chianti and Brunello di Montalcino, and is the spiritual home of Sangiovese.(quote pinched from Majestic web site) I would enjoy drinking any of those in a Tuscan restaurant. Perhaps with an Indian/Bangladeshi Tuscan restaurant one of these italysfinestwines.it/en/best-white-wines-tuscany/. I would take advice. Quite honestly I know nothing about the wines of Tuscany, but if I was staying their for a week or two then I would learn pretty fast. I would not want Coke.

It has been pointed out that a luxury cruise ship could have been chartered for less than the government have contracted for. And the possibility of being trapped on a ship with Jane McDonald would act as a pretty potent deterrent.

Are we talking about Government ministers as an alternative to falling on their swords? No. I did mean using the ministers instead of planks of wood

Short of a lot of things, can't list them all but including compassion, empathy, common sense, honesty, scruples, etc.,
