It has been pointed out that a luxury cruise ship could have been chartered for less than the government have contracted for.
It's inconceivable - surely - that a few pals of government ministers might be making a fast buck on the arrangement.

Jeremy Hunt who is paying for it probably thinks Bibby Stockholm is a village in Midsomer Murders

I think he'd be more likely to say that he didn't realise anything. He's not big on sentience.

As Home Secretary he would have been big on sentencing, but Priti and Suella would have been bigger and harder

The cynic in me wonders if a Tory party MP or donor might be making a few quid from this? Where do you want to start... Langham Industries, they own Portland Port where the Bibby Stockholm is housed. They got £2.5million from the government for the barge to be placed there. They donated £70,000 to UKIP and one of the Langhams is a Tory councillor in Dorset. They are also the people who own Langham Wines. Corporate Travel Management, an Australian company(!) will be dealing with management and security...£20,000 a day! They've recently got contracts from the Home Office totalling £1.6billion

Sadly, even a barge that has a dangerous infection on it is probably much better than the place these poor people came here to escape from.
It's impossible to discuss this without considering the politics of its existence. Either you sink the migrant boats as soon as the reach the boundary of UK territorial waters (the Brexit Final Solution?), or you have to accommodate the passengers on them somewhere when they arrive. What is rarely discussed is why the UK appears so much more attractive than other countries. Clearly the mismanaged economy (compared to other western countries in western Europe) is not a sufficient deterrent.
Cynically, I also note that the transport of the migrants to the UK was by default outsourced to private 'businessmen'. If they are going to come here anyway, why can't a legitimate (and tax-paying) UK-based business provide the service?

Some time ago, I read that one reason migrants favour the UK is that for many, English is their second language.
