lesleysm2 how did the shoot go? Any pics from it? Didn't happen in the end yet but remains on the cards for the time being I think my camera may be broken. When I go to aperture priority it won't focus the little green light has vanished. Works fine it auto but in anything else the lens moves in and out of focus but the shutter won't depress Had something like it with my D3100 when someone on here suggested there was a problem with the pentaprism Any suggestions appreciated as to how I can sort it out as I can't afford a new camera

Wot's the camera? You could get lots of suggestions. Just knowing that it is a Nikon raises possibilities.

Have you tried it outdoors in plenty of light? Same issue? Often the inability to focus is down to the light level but if it focuses in "auto" it does sound like something else

Go into the menu and try a factory reset just in case you've changed a setting and not realised it.

On most Nikon DSLRs by default the shutter will not fire if the camera cannot find focus in AF-S. The shutter will fire if focus cannot be confirmed in AF-C. The default behaviour can usually (maybe always)changed by the a1 and a2 settings in the Custom Settings Menu.
