I posted about the cancellation of a scout's fun day in WGYG thread.
About 1000 cubs/scouts were due to board a steam train at 10:45 to travel to the venue. Just before 10am the decision was made to cancel (hammering rain all night). By 10:15 all of my grandson's troop had been notified.
I can't speak for the other troops of course. I'm impressed by the fore thought that the leaders had in putting into place a 'phone cascade' system to inform parents of late decisions and impressed with how well it worked.
I know this through email and follow up email.

A further follow-up email was received last night. Apparently the ground where the events were to take place is well drained and the forecast was that the rain would ease at about 8am. Had that forecast been accurate the event would almost certainly have happened.
Instead of easing, the rain got heavier and by 9am was monsoonlike. By 9.30 many of those organizing the various activities were saying that they couldn't run them safely. The organising committee then took the decision to abort and the contingency cancellation plan was initiated.
I understand that the 'system' failed to contact about 50 of the 1000 due to attend and of course there were folk at the station to send them home.
As Kath says above - impressive.
Finally we are told that refunds will be given but that the software that they use (Online Scout Manager) isn't geared for refunds so they will find another way. I have said don't bother - keep the (relatively small) amount as a donation or use it to defray some of the inevitable costs that will have been incurred.
