I believe that advertisers' maxim is "It's better to be hated than ignored". Notoriety isn't as good as fame, but it's heaps better than obscurity!

It's good to be respected but it is better to be feared.

"The only thing worse than being talked about is not being talked about" (Oscar Wilde) " Truth is never pure and rarely simple" - Oscar Wilde. Smart guy.

I don't understand the thread - surely you don't watch advertisements at normal speed so that the sound is audible? Everything watched by my wife and I, plus some Radio 3 and 4 stuff too, is recorded on a Freeview hard disc recorder. All advertisements are briefly viewed on fast forward.

That's the only way to watch adverts!!
Have you noticed that, in adland Britain, every couple is mixed race. Even at fast forward that's noticeable.

Actually, some aren't - they're gay/lesbian couples. Or for some ads, usually insurance, single parents.
I think it's one of the reasons to watch adverts, even if only in batches now and again, to see how they change over time. Or how they vary from channel to channel depending on each channel's target demographic - probably a PhD in it for some Media Studies graduate.
But if you're not interested in some of the wider aspects of life, ignore them. The advertisers don't care - you've probably help pay for them anyway. Even if you don't have a TV at all...

I believe that advertisers' maxim is "It's better to be hated than ignored". Notoriety isn't as good as fame, but it's heaps better than obscurity! Mae West observed this perfectly with 'It's better to be looked over than overlooked'.
