Russia is being grumpy about the provision of depleted uranium shells to Ukraine. But it's Ok, the authorities have issued this statement:
"Russia knows this, but is deliberately trying to disinform. Independent research by scientists from groups such as the Royal Society has assessed that any impact to personal health and the environment from the use of depleted uranium munitions is likely to be low."
That's comforting. If my tank gets hit with such a shell the risk to me is low!

Putin knows damn well that DU armour piecing rounds are the most effective, so is trying to put the wind up us. He also knows that any military action against us would trigger the Third (And last) World War.

The kinetic effect of DU is likely to be quite detrimental...

Were some of the illnesses that the services suffered post Gulf War attributed to the use of depleted uranium?

Depleted uranium(DU) is very slightly radio active. From a radioactive point of view it is no more dangerous than a lump of Devon granite. DU is what is left over when you have removed from natural uranium the dangerous stuff that powers most nuclear reactors and primitive atom bombs. Even top end racing yachts use DU in their keels. DU is useful in shells and yachts for the simple reason that it is very dense. My concern is that we should not waste DU. Used correctly in a nuclear reactor it can capture neutrons and become plutonium 239 (simplifying there for arts grad scientists). Plutonium 239 can be used in better bombs and peaceful reactors. All heavy chemically active metals are toxic from a chemical point of view.

You wouldn't know about it. No risk of cancers and the like from radioactivity. You would be instantly vaporised from the blast of the shell and your own ammunition. It would be more humane than the end prescribed to dying patients by our doctors.

Were some of the illnesses that the services suffered post Gulf War attributed to the use of depleted uranium? More likely the jabs against fictitious diseases.

It is toxic. All heavy metals are toxic (except something like gold which is extremely unreactive). Lead, from which water pipes were made from is toxic. The point I was making is that DU is not something special from a safety point of view.

More likely to be blasted to toxic dust that gets into lungs, food and drink. Lead is not used in anti tank weapons... nor is gold for that matter. Edit Admittedly, though, the minimum the minimum operational range of a Copperhead is 3Km. Edit 2 - So impressed I typed it twice, 'onest guff.

All heavy metals including uranium are highly toxic. If the tank armour and superheated shell fragments do not kill you. You are certain to be poisoned by the toxic uranium vapour. That is if your own ammunition has not yet exploded under you. Not many people survive in Russian tanks that are hit by anything more destructive than a baby rattle anyway.

However, Russian tanks were much more effective in WWII than the vastly superior German Tiger tanks because of the numbers game.
Tigers -Under 1,400 Russian tanks - 30,000 to 40,000 (cannot remember the name of the beast so cannot check numbers). President P seems to be playing the same game with young men.
