Treated myself to a boat trip around Poole Harbour today. Sadly the weather closed in and photography was impossible. Plenty seen though. Eight Spoonbills, a good range of waders, terns, gulls, and most notably 6 Ospreys, 3 of which were hunting together.

Just had an eagle circling a few minutes ago. Sadly by the time I grabbed the scope for a proper ID it had circled out of view. Likely white tailed given proximity to Forth.

The Isle of Wight birds regularly take trips to Scotland and Germany. The male of the pair that have claimed a territory in Poole Harbour was tracked on a trip to Sweden, via the Low Countries and Denmark.

Sadly many of ours take trips in the back of landrovers to be dumped in the sea so as to avoid implicating the estates where they were poisoned.

Suspicion is he got caught in a snap trap baited for Goshawks. Gamekeepers are the handbaggiest of handbags. We used to beat them up at agricultural college.

On more positive news, my new toys arrived today. I sold some redundant lenses and used the proceeds to buy some new binoculars (my aging Olympus ones kept fogging up) and a spotting scope ready for a winter of twitching.

Two sessions at Poole Harbour and all I got to show for t was this Sandwich Tern. sandwich tern by Martin Bone, on Flickr We did see Opsreys successfully hunt on both occasions, but out of camera range, but great to watch through the binoculars. Also watched a little egret at Middlebere panic when it realised the bass it caught was a tad too big for lunch. Also got a distant shot of a Kingfisher at my local nature reserve yesterday. kingfisher by Martin Bone, on Flickr
