I like looking at old maps, occasionally find some strange anomalies, a local stream has gradually been piped underground and housing built over it and in one place a recreation ground built over it in the 1920s, one of it's tributaries to the north has now assumed it's name, they even changed the name of a road alongside the recreation ground.

I have quite a few OS maps and some from our travels around Europe however I now have an OS digital subscription which is fine.

They'll even do paper maps centred on a spot you specify, and put one of your own pictures on the front: MapEtc by Steve Higgins, on Flickr

I have the digital subscription too, but there is something nice about paper maps. I've got quite a stack of the old paper maps, used to have them pinned to walls when I lived by myself. Got the OS digital subscription as well, one of the things I like about that is you can plan routes on your computer and save them to the app to use on your phone.

Indeed. We have, near us, two short sections of “Lester’s Lane” separated by about a mile (as the crow flies) and presumably these are what remain of a much longer lane. I’ ve been through all the old maps I could find online but haven’t become any wiser. I presume it fell into disuse a long time ago.

Peter, there's an excellent website (part of National Library of Scotland) that shows two maps side-by-side so you can compare changes over time. This is a link to it: Side by side georeferenced maps viewer - Map images - National Library of Scotland

Loads of unusual maps available & far more maps for my bit of Essex than any English site I've found! including local geology, administrative borders etc. I knew someone would come up with a link quicker than I could

Funnily enough I've found exactly the same for Oxfordshire as well as Essex.
