Having now been using the D5 for seven months I have refined the programming. The rear AF On buttons are programmed, in continuous AF, to activate 9 point dynamic AF. A half press of the shutter button activates 3D AF and the lens focus button activated 27 point dynamic AF. Having a dedicated button for a different AF mode is very useful but I doubt my settings would be suitable for anyone else.

I have set both my D500 up the same way.I have MY default settings on an SD card so that after using the camera I can make sure that everything is as it should be. AF-S is disabled. I tried using BBF on a need it basis but that lead to mistakes. I always use BBF whether it is needed or not. Pressing the BBF button engages AF in my default mode. The PV and F1 buttons engage AF and also change the mode. The camera has various custom setting banks. Bank B is factory settings. This is useful for when someone else takes a picture to include myself.Explaining BBF to someone who usually uses a smart phone is not a good idea.

I now have a camera with the ability to do BBF, but haven't found a usage need yet. Got the Fn button on the front to switch AF settings or in MF to do the focus assist enlargement. I can programme the back button but haven't decided yet what to set it to do.

I now have a camera with the ability to do BBF, but haven't found a usage need yet. It is basically a variant on AF lock or of pre-focussing on a marker. I most use it if I am photographing something at a fixed distance from me but often hidden from view. I can effectively lock focus (whether using continuous or single shot AF) when I get a clear view and then be sure that focus won't jump to something unexpected when I release the shutter (the AF on the shutter release needs to be disabled which is usually a menu command). Example would be a bird partially hidden in reeds.

The instance which caused me to try out BBF many years ago, was when trying to photograph a swan which was gliding along on a lake, behind some reeds, and was intermittently coming into clear view. The AF on the shutter button (half-press) was going berserk, alternately switching between the swan and the reeds. In the end, it managed neither properly.
Using BBF in similar circumstances, it's possible to gain focus on the intended subject (when there's a clear view) after which, the focus remains static while you're re-composing, and persuading the AE to behave itself. With BBF, half-pressing the shutter button no longer invokes an attempt at focus.

To clarify, I understood the usage scenario, just haven't found myself in it to date.

Apologies - I must have misunderstood the 'brief'. (I'll cancel the invoice. )
