I run a PC with Win10 and have a wireless mouse. I also use M'Soft Excel for several purposes.
Recently the mouse batteries failed and I replaced them. A couple of days later I opened Excel and it began scrolling uncontrollably to the right.
It took me a long time to find that it was to do with the mouse and the batteries. Eventually by removing and replacing the mouse dongle the problem was cured.
I hope that this is useful to somebody at some time in the future.

Good tip which has worked for me but not always. I find a wireless mouse needs replacing after 2/3 years. My last one developed a mind of its own with the cursor leaping all over the screen. I tried everything but eventually I replaced it with a wired one, which is not a problem as it is on a desk.

It is also worth running the system file checker every now and again. There are instructions online. There is a two step process - validate consistency of system file versions (all up to date) then integrity of function.

I tried a wireles mouse a couple of computers ago but junked it as it devoured batteries. Basically it was too sensitive to movement so the laser was constantly firing up even when it was not being used.

I have been using a Magic Track pad with my iMac for about 12 years and I replace batteries pretty rarely. It is a Bluetooth device as is the keyboard.

Wireless mouse has worked fine with my iMac for more than 10 years. Uses 2 AA batteries so sparingly that I leave it always on. Use a wired keyboard because it has two USB ports on it.

On my iMac, the wireless keyboard and trackpad is charged via a lightning cable from the Mac. it lasts for months between recharges. I couldn't imagine ever using a mouse again. Been around 6 years since I used a mouse and that was at work.

Been around 6 years since I used a mouse and that was at work. I cannot get on with a trackpad at all. Tried it for a while but it was a disaster. I use a Mac at home and PC at work. For work I have one of those ergonomic mice. Mouses? An ergonomic mouse. At home a bog standard wireless apple mouse. It annoys me intensely that I can't charge the apple mouse and use it at the same time and there's not warning that it's about to give out. (Sorry, this shoudl probably be on the 'gear grinding' thread.)

That's good to know, thank you! Although it does still require me to think 'I wonder how low the battery is' when what I really want is a red flashing warning light! I do try to put it on to charge on a Monday morning before I leave for work but sometimes mornings are a bit manic and I don't always remember.

I think Kath has the Magic Mouse II, I have the Magic Track Pad and a Magic Mouse but neither allows battery charging so I use expendable batteries. Some devices can't use rechargeables because the terminal voltage is too low. The battery life is such that I rarely change them.

Not inordinately so but it does seem to go out at the most inopportune moments. In fairness there is a pop up on the screen to warn me that the mouse is low but if I'm in the middle of something I tend to make a mental note to recharge it later, crack on with what I'm doing and then totally forget to plug it in. Using my new found knowledge (thank you Geoffr) I could see that it was at 56% earlier. I plugged it in while I went for a shower and it's now at 80+% charged so I'm good for a while I expect!

I tried a wireless mouse in 2013 when I got a new Windows 7 PC, and after a few very frustrating days abandoned it and and connected up my old wired mouse which is still in use.
The receiver for the wireless mouse was never more than 50 or 60 cm from the mouse and on the same table, but whatever the state of the battery reception appeared to be unreliable. I would only try one again if there was a 30 day free trial offer that allowed me to return it (collected from my house) - is any retailer sufficiently confident about any wireless mouse that they would make such an offer? Don't suggest Amazon because I would have to take it to a post office 3 or 4 miles away, which might cost me more than the mouse.

I don’t know about windows computers but my Apple ones have Bluetooth built in so there is no separate receiver. The mouse, or trackpad, connects and away you go. Surely there’s a PC with integrated Bluetooth that will work with a wireless mouse. Of course it could be that your USB version is part of the problem but you hardly need massive bandwidth or super high speed for a mouse. My iMac is a 2011 version, as is the mouse, but the mouse is happy to work with a 2018 MacBook Pro. Macs have had Bluetooth for a long time.
