If you truly want a fire & sinking experience then you really need a 'Stolly'. I'm sure squeamishossifrage can confirm this. I never had much to do with Stalwarts, although we did have a lot of Radar Saracens running around and there was one story at least in BAOR of Saracens sinking because the driver "thought they were just like Stollys". I was an 'Arty Int' guy and our command post was an FV432, but my driver damn near sank that (and me with it) in a post-exercise impromptu race with a West German Army (the exercise 'enemy') M113 across Hohne Plain. The WGA was ahead of us, heading into a very large deep pond. This M113 variant had an automatic flotation screen which I saw go up, our FV432 did not, only a manual one that required two men - two very brave men, if travelling at speed over rough terrain - to put it up. I just managed to stop my driver who clearly thought he was Ben Hur, before water got into the hatches. |
