The first car I drove I had to double declutch changing gears. Great fun. I remember it as a stick shift, but the car looked more like a 2CV. Wonder what it was? All I recall was that it was a beige colour!!

I think it's actually a third generation Escort hatchback, judging by the rear lights, wheel trim, exhaust placement and bonnet lock. The Mark 1 only came in saloon or estate versions. The only anomaly is that the up-sweep of the rear side window looks a bit extreme for an Escort.

Definitely not an Escort Mk3 (I had one) - much more likely a Scirocco...

You could well be right - the rear window up-sweep is a much better fit than that of the Escort. I was just wondering how dreampolice could forget what his car was.
