One of my daughters in law is interested in photography. At Christmas she was bought a (film) OM1. I visited yesterday and had a play. What a pleasure. I had completely forgotten the delight in handling such a beautifully made precision instrument. Knocks modern cameras into touch!! Mick

My first SLR was an OM1n and, yes, a beautifully made piece of kit it was. Sadly I couldn't get on with it as it seemed a bit small for my hands and I kept finding that if I changed aperture after focussing I often nudged the focus off without noticing. Eventually I traded it in against a Nikon FM - a bit less jewel like precision perhaps but more practical for me. I still have it too.

A few weeks ago I revisited the OM10, I'm sure the 1 is even sweeter but I'd forgotten how small and simple it was. The only thing I didn't like was the shutter noise which sounds like something breaking after the Nikon CLUNK! I've got used to.

I ran a roll of XP2 through my OM1n last year, it's certainly a very nicely made camera.

Film cameras are like elephants. Very nice to look at but I would not like to own one.

Is there anybody on the forum who has just 'a' camera? I know I don't. I just tried counting them but stopped when I ran out of fingers, so just shy of a dozen!

Olympus is one brand of SLR I've not owned, or used. Nikon is another...

According to my spreadsheet I currently have 88, just over half or which are film. I suspect the numbers might be skewed somewhat by digital point & shoot models that have been discarded but not removed from the spreadsheet. I'm running short of space but would be keen to get a wooden model from the 1800's. I do have a kodak from between 1916 & 1919 & at least one other made prior to 1930. Perhaps over 100 but neither quite make it, the mahogany LF models have an extra appeal. FWIW film/plates are still available for my relics, so they may even get used again.

I can see why you'd want to retain a couple of film cameras..... but why have you got two elephants?

I had 2 turn up today. Both near mint, in boxes. Actually, I tell a lie, there were 3 cameras, but the third wasn't in its own box, but one for a Pentax P&S. The 3rd was a Kodak Instamatic 177x, slightly fancier than my very first camera, a 33x. Fancier in that it had a direct connection for Magicubes, instead of needing an adapater, it had lever wind instead of knob wind, and a fancy metal covering on the front. The other 2 were Prakticas - a PLC3, the first model Praktica I owned, and an EE3. I've been after a nice EE3 for ages, my other one is an absolute beater, and a decent PLC3 is a bonus. Came with electric versions of the Pentacon 50mm f1.8 - never hurts to have another - and a boxed Carl Zeiss Jena 135mm f3.5 Sonnar, one of my favourite lenses. And a few other bits and pieces, including an Adaptall mount for Praktica electric screw and a twin-tube Hanimex flash, along with original receipt - cost £26 39 years ago last week. And I didn't pay a lot more than that for the entire job lot.
I enjoy using film. I enjoy using digital. Wouldn't want to go back to shooting everything on film, but I really enjoy using old cameras. The OM1 is a delight in many ways, but I do prefer some others.

P.S. Obviously I'm at the absolute opposite end of the scale from "a camera", and I'm not suggesting that's normal or in any way admirable, it just is what it is. Feel free to consider me an idiot for it.

FWIW I do actually own a film camera. My fathers Retina IIC. I first used it at my (little) big sisters graduation, complete failure my sister did not trust me to load film so she got a lassie on the photo counter at Boots to load the film she had just bought. It was not loaded "properly". I am not convinced the lassie knew you had to pull the film and wrap it round the spool. I did use it successfully on a 3 week motorbike holiday round europe circa 1980 and a holiday to New England circa 1988. Not stuck a film in it since.
