My car is worth almost nothing (big diesel and very high mileage) and I live in fear of even a minor prang because almost anything would cause a write off and I REALLY don't want that.
Mick
Yup. 10cm bodywork scrape which made no difference to its running condition. I have to ask, why did you make a claim? Tell your insurance company by all means but you don't have to claim and if you don't claim they cant write it off.

I don't recall all the details as it was a decade ago. The guilty party was a police/custody vehicle so perhaps that was something to do with it? I probably naively didn't expect the write off. I've definitely been better off as a result though because I've not owned a car since.

The most shocking thing is you can afford a full tank of fuel.

I got my dad's old car and it was on 199,nnn when it was written off by a minor prang caused by someone driving into it whilst parked. Had been really looking forward to getting it over 200k. You know you can buy them off the insurance company, often for next to nothing when written off?
Brother in law did if a few months back. Car rammed into his, written off by insurance company. Asked if he could buy it back and got if for about £50. Asked about fixing it at the garage (I think where it was assessed) and it was a couple of hundred pounds. Got the insurance payout (from the other driver) and got his car fixed. He was in pocket despite having to hire a car for a while as well.

The most shocking thing is you can afford a full tank of fuel. That relates to another post I made about fuel being about 13p/litre cheaper in a town nearby. If I'm there I fill to the brim - saved me more than £7 as compared with buying locally.

I can save 10p per litre by driving 6 miles. Given that I am actually just 1 mile from the fuel station about three times a week the extra mile saves me around £3.50.

I remember a bloke at work years ago who'd had his car stolen about thirty seconds after filling the tank up to the brim. From thereonin he only generally put in a fiver's worth of fuel because that's what it cost him to get to work and back. I remember thinking he was mad but these days...
One side effect of this cost of living crisis has been that we have really cut down on car trips. The consequence of which has been that the car (which is already an 06 reg) is not getting any nice long jaunts, just short trips to work and back. And the consequence of that has been two days when I've gone to start the car and found the battery flat as a pancake.

My car has a diesel particulate filter and to clean it the exhaust has to get pretty hot and that triggers the cleaning cycle. The exhaust never gets hot enough with short trips so the warning light comes on. The fix is to drive at a constant engine speed of 3000rpm or more until the cleaning cycle starts.
It can be a bit of a nuisance

Yesterday I had to do a trip of 70 miles each way. For reasons I won't go into I limited speed to about 55mph, even on the M'way. I got an indicated fuel consumption of 63mpg!! Not bad for a big engine.
