From my point of view the first is also why not.
For the second yes very much so. If neutral parties are persuaded of the case then gender reassignment might be reasonable for 16 year olds, but they are not even considered old enough to vote, where their opinions will doubtless be outweighed by the majority.

I'm happy to recognise whatever gender people want to be.
I don't need to check their paperwork and have no desire to stand in their way if they want it changed.

Thanks for the replies. Some food for thought.
To answer Nick. I too, as I said, have very distant personal experience. I agree that this forum isn't the place for details. All I know is that, when the child was young, the transition appeared to go smoothly. I understand that, as puberty approaches, the road is becoming a little more bumpy. This is very much third party 'gossip' so I don't offer it as fact.
I disagree with the statement that it's nothing to do with anyone else. It has an impact in all sorts of ways from educational establishments, medical services and the obvious social issues. An example. My nine year old grandson is a cub and booked for camp. There are a couple of girls in his pack and one of them also booked for camp. Maybe the leader made too much of it but there was quite a discussion about where the girl should sleep and permissions were sought all round. I imagine that the questions would have been harder if that girl had the body of a boy, especially if the rest of the pack were ignorant.

Mick On that specific point of cubs and brownies I would think it sensible for both packs to share a camp but sleeping accommodation and showers to be differentiated by real sex. Why should prepubescent children have to join cubs or brownies? Would it not be better for cubs and brownies to mix as they do in school, but be segregated when they use dormitories.

Maybe I wasn’t clear. The boys and girls are in a single pack of Cubs. The camp was under canvas and the children don’t sleep with the leaders. On this occasion only one girl attended the camp and it was deemed unwise for her to sleep alone in a tent. Therefore the question of where she did sleep arose. In the end I think that she slept in a tent with some boys who were also her classmates. All necessary permissions were sought and granted.

I'd like some views from people other than my immediate circle - folk with very different outlook from me! I'd also like to stay away from the politics if possible. Two questions: 1. Should a person (of any age) be allowed to reassign their gender just on their own say so?
2. Is 16 too young? I'd genuinely appreciate your considered thoughts. Mick.
1 Possibly not. Gender identity is very personal thing but there is an argument that the person in question may be too involved and distressed to make an appropriate decision. The involvement of an external party even if only on a casual basis may help the individual concerned step back a little and take a look at their situation from a slightly different perspective. That said I don't think any outsider should necessarily have the final decision - everyone should have the freedom to make their own choice and live with the consequences, good or bad... 2 I think so, at least without medical or psychiatric assessment. Adolescence is something of an emotional and hormonal rollercoaster and most 16 year olds are still in the middle of it. Better surely to wait a year or two rather than make a decision that may well end up being bitterly regretted.

So do we think a trans woman rapist should be housed in a woman’s prison I don't actually know any of the details of this case, but would start by asking if a man was imprisoned having raped another man, where would be be sent? Would the potential victim-hood of that person's co-prisoners be a factor in that decision? Unlikely. Not an easy decision at any rate.

Mick I'm not suggesting that there aren't potential implications for others, but that the decision is not for others to make. And before that decision is made, I do agree that those implications should be explained. I'm not sure of the relevance of your cubs story if we're talking about 16, to be honest - there shouldn't be any cubs over 11, surely?

I think the case of the “trans woman rapist” highlights just how difficult the situation can become. There are many examples of people who regret their actions and want to be what they were originally. We can’t stop people from doing what they want but we can, and probably should, ensure that everyone has the information that need and lots of time before they embark on an irreversible course.

Would the potential victim-hood of that person's co-prisoners be a factor in that decision? Unlikely. Not an easy decision at any rate. As we both live in Scotland, a Man raping another man (given under Scots law this would require a penis and a vagina) would be a rather rare occuranceand it is not possibly the most immediate theoritical situation to consider. Not saying it is unimportant and the question of whether trans men with working female genitalia should be incarcerated in male prisons is an issue. Not just not as an immediate issue as the current issue.
