Neither of these measures will make you live longer - your life will just feel interminable.

James O'Brien had a call in on the cake issue today. It was actually quite interesting hearing from folk affected by the amount of cakes brought into some work places and their own admittedly inability to say no.
It used to be the same at my workplace. Someones birthday, cakes appeared, new to the team, cakes appeared, leaving the team, cakes appeared, crashed a police car, cakes appeared, cakes appeared as fines for being late, fecking up a shooting reclassification, or anything else that was deemed fine worthy. Sometimes someone would just make a cake for the hell of it, we had lemon drizzle cake competitions too, were a couple of lads would bring in their best efforts, Considering if one had been at home, those cakes would not have featured (or certainly in the amount that appeared), so for someone with a problem or a sugar addiction, the temptation must be horrendous.

Well I know what I want. I want cake AND fine wine. I'm sure the wine will look great on the table in plain packaging with a big health warning and a picture of someone that died chocking on their own puke....not!

Well, I've just done the booze maths, and I figured I used up my lifetime allowance about thirty years ago, so I guess I must be dead and buried by now.
Damn - I must have missed it, and it would have been one hell of a wake!

I mean, to be fair, the night that I spent in A&E at the Glasgow Infirmary when my daughter was admitted the other week was hell and I reckon 90% of the people in there were in there for either directly-alcohol-related reasons or mental health issues that hadn't been helped by alcoholism. the one chap demanding to see a doctor because it was his right to see one who was at the same time proudly telling everyone who wold listen that the reason he was throwing up constantly was down to the four bottles of vodka he'd been poisoning himself with over the last 24 hours was a case in point and not the most damaged individual on the ward. Never been more pleased to get out of a place!

When I was in hospital with an abscess on my liver I had the misfortune to share a ward with alcoholics drying out. I doubt hiding booze behind screens and gruesome labels will stop them. My doctor was blunt with them. One more drink would probably kill them, but this was the third or fourth attempts at getting clean.

Alcoholism is something I have difficulty understanding. What kind of pressure pushes people that way? I really enjoy a drink or two - in fact, I enjoy it enough to never overdo it, and then have to give it up, and I have definitely been through some periods of significant trauma.
I guess it comes down to walking a mile in another person's shoes before understanding it.

What makes someone a smoker or a drug user? I dare say it is down to the individual as well as the actual thing be it alcohol or whatever.
My S-I-L is an alcoholic and I dare say her parents were. I never saw them without a drink. My wife isn't though. My brother has had an issue with alcohol. I haven't. Some folk have more addictive personalities and are more likely to succumb to an addiction.
As for trauma, after I lost my daughter, I purposefully didn't drink any alcohol for several months in case I took solace in the bottle (even though I doubt I would have). I didn't want to take that chance.

I see they are now recommending no-one brings cake into work. I quite understand it's bad to force people to have it, but where I work we get birthday cakes offered less than once a month and if you would rather not that's just fine.
If the kill joys have there way, that might drive me to drink even if I can't buy nice drinks anymore. There is a HUGE tank of bioethanol at work (>99.9% ethanol). The flavor wouldn't be nice but if they take away current pleasures I might want to forget about life!

I had one or two embarrassing blow outs in my late teens / very early twenties, so much so that it cured me of wanting to get drunk, so if I say I like a glass of wine, or a bottle of beer, that means a, singular, one glass of wine with Sunday lunch or one bottle of beer with Saturday dinner.

I've never smoked, nor wanted to.
