My eyesight might be failing but I can still spot a yellow stickered item from five miles away in the fog. Blindfolded. I think my 'best' yellow stickered item wasn't even bought by me. A vegetarian friend in Dundee found a huge block of parmesan for 6p which she posted first class. At that strikeless point in time it arrived the next morning and I divvied it up and bunged it in the freezer ready for grating. Aside from that I fairly regularly do a 'whatever's yellow stickered' dinner and yesterday's example featured a quiche (49p) with homemade coleslaw using a 10p red cabbage and homemade potato salad with potatoes that Morrisons had given away to our local Mental Health hub. I did have to pay full price for a bag of carrots which was annoying but still. The entire meal for four was £1.03.
What's your best yellow sticker type bargain?

I think that the impact of yellow stickers varies according to location. I have a son who lives in Liverpool. He's a demon for yellow stickers and he regularly reports super bargains with massive reducions. However, here in Kent, we rarely see a massive reduction. Maybe we are regarded as rich and able to pay (which we are not).

Over here, as a captive audience, we are lucky to see 10p off an item even with today's use by date on it. I don't know if staff get the last swipe at items left, but for us customers? Nothing doing.

I know from working in Tesco in stock control that items on the last day we could sell them were reduced in stages throughout the day so you might only see 10p off something in the morning but there will be three or four go-rounds for the person with the pricing gun and if you can get a sense of when they do their reductions you can snag a good deal. Our local Tesco (only a small one) closes at 10pm and we eat quite late so I will often leave it until about 7pm before going to check what they have. I usually finish work at 6pm and have found Morrisons do a round of reductions just about then so I go there on my way home and then scoop up whatever Tesco has to bulk it out.

Our local small Tesco used to have some brilliant reductions, but after a refit, nothing. Well, almost nothing. When my son was in Leeds, he got great discounts from the local Co-Op. Now in Cardiff, at Lidl, not so much.

What's your best yellow sticker type bargain? Many years ago I picked up a couple of packets of reduced bread rolls at Tesco. It seems the item was part of a BOGOF & the system refunded me the full price for the second item. I don't remember the price now but Tesco was actually paying me to take them Sadly they've rehashed the system, so if there's a BOGOF and the items are reduced by 30% you're now better off ignoring the reduced ones & digging out some that are completely fresh.

Yes I've noticed this too. Very rarely, I don't make enough dinner for there to be leftovers for lunch the next day but this happened yesterday. As I've still not done a 'proper' shop we've no bread or other packed lunch stuff in at the moment so I nipped to the Tesco garage near my office. I spied yellow stickered sandwiches (which is what happens when you don't get a lunch break until 4pm) and was about to gather up reduced items for my lunch when I realised it would be cheaper to buy them all as part of the regualr price meal deal. Not exactly helping reduce food waste is it?

Not quite a yellow sticker, but just before Christmas posters on a forum I read were talking about a supermarket chain which had lamb legs on special. I picked up a 2.5kg leg for $23, and it made a fine Christmas dinner (and 2 meals of leftovers) for 3 of us. They had the same legs last week, for $51.

Lesley always posts her deals. I have never seen anything close to that where I live and shop. Discounts, yes, but never that much. it could be down to the times I go perhaps.

Maybe you keep the good stuff for yourselves? Been a while since I checked but offer price was often £5 a kilo for scotch lamb legs when I worked with it. Usual price was £10/kg with prepackaged NZ lamb a little cheaper.

What's your best yellow sticker type bargain? A bag of carrots for 10p.... we had a lady working as a temp where I was at that time and a few of us were joking about something with a bag of carrots being touted as a reward for something. It just so happened that I stopped off in the supermarket on my way home, and it just so happened that they had a bag of carrots reduce to 10p, so I bought it and presented it to her the next morning. Pre-pandemic I used to regularly find medium sized containers of coleslaw reduced to about 16p on my way home from work so they became a regular purchase. I don't suppose that a bag of Christmas gift tags reduced to 10p counts? I was in a non-local supermarket last Saturday and they had a big display of Pannetones left over from Christmas reduced to 50p each from about £6 or £7. It seemed rude not to buy, so I bought 2

I'll put it away with the other advent items so that hopefully I don't forget that I have it. I would also have purchased the panettone but probably not two of them. Although...thinking about the 'what didn't get eaten' thread and the suggestion for christmas cake and butter pudding, I think a panettone version would be equally delicious!

One of my favourite bargains was wild salmon when I could get it cheaper than dog food. It helped that I was the one doing the reductions off the counters 4 days a week so at one point it was 90% off before another 10% off at the checkout....
I tried to limit steak to 3 times a week. According to the Tango there is nothing that can be done to a raw ribeye to make it better....I offered him raw and cooked and he went for the raw one.

About as big on 'savouring' their food as my cat then!
